The 12th Man is a Norwegian war drama set during the Second World War. It follows a group of resistance fighters sent from Britain to carry out a sabotage operation against a German air base on the Norwegian coast. The mission collapses at sea when their fishing vessel is attacked, and eleven of the twelve men are captured. The sole survivor, Jan Baalsrud, escapes and tries to reach neutral Sweden while evading the Gestapo in the frozen landscape of northern Norway. The pursuit is led by a German commander, Kurt Stage, while Baalsrud depends on the courage of ordinary Norwegian civilians he meets along the way. The story is based on real events.
Harald Zwart directed the film, which followed The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones in his filmography. Petter Skavlan wrote the screenplay, and Zwart produced with Aage Aaberge and Espen Horn. Thomas Gullestad plays Jan Baalsrud, with Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Kurt Stage. Marie Blokhus, Mads Sjøgård Pettersen, Martin Kiefer and Vegar Hoel appear in supporting roles. Made for roughly 8 million dollars, the film took about 10 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb it holds a 7.1 rating from 634 votes, while the film critics' score stands at 6.7 from 22 reviews, indicating broadly favorable responses from both audiences and critics.
