Cube 2: Hypercube
Short description
Eight strangers wake up in a series of connected cubic rooms with no memory of how they arrived. They discover they are trapped in a hypercube where the traditional laws of physics and time do not apply. To escape this geometric labyrinth and survive the deadly traps within, the group must work together to uncover the secrets of the fourth dimension before the structure disintegrates.
This Canadian mystery and science fiction thriller was directed by Andrzej Sekula, marking the first of two films he has directed, followed by While We Sleep in 2021. The screenplay was written by Sean Hood, Ernie Barbarash, and Lauren McLaughlin, with Barbarash also serving as producer for Lions Gate Films. The cast includes Kari Matchett, Geraint Wyn Davies, Grace Lynn Kung, Matthew Ferguson, Neil Crone, and Barbara Gordon.
The film earned 4 million USD at the worldwide box office. It holds a 5.5/10 rating on IMDb based on 73,000 votes and a matching 5.5/10 on TMDB from 1,680 votes. Film critics gave the movie a slightly lower score of 5.3/10 based on 11 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- The watch found by Jerry in one of the rooms has a serial number different from his own, which, according to the theory of parallel universes on which the physics of the 'cube' is built, is impossible.
- Initially, Lionsgate studio planned to film a prequel. However, the sequel script, proposed by screenwriters Sean Hood and Ernie Barbarash, was so well-received by the producers that a decision was made to film a second 'Cube'.
- Originally, the traps in Cube were supposed to exactly replicate identical traps from the original. But since the script made the Cube much more complex, it was decided to replace the real props with computer-generated special effects.
