Short description
Nels Coxman is a snowplow driver in the Colorado ski town of Kehoe, where he lives a quiet life with his wife and son and has been honoured as citizen of the year. That life collapses when his son dies, and Nels comes to hold a local drug boss known as Viking responsible. What begins as a search for answers turns into a deliberate campaign of revenge, as Nels works his way through the men around Viking, moving steadily closer to the man at the top. His actions set off consequences that spread well beyond the two of them.
Cold Pursuit is a remake of director Hans Petter Moland's own 2014 film In Order of Disappearance, moving the story from Norway to the American Rockies. It is Moland's sixth feature, arriving between A Conspiracy of Faith and Absolution, and was written by Frank Baldwin. Liam Neeson plays Nels, with Tom Bateman as Viking, Tom Jackson as White Bull Legrew, Laura Dern as Grace Coxman and Emmy Rossum as Kim Dash, among a credited cast of 47 and a crew of 197.
The film was released in February 2019. Made for about 60 million dollars, it took in roughly 76 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from around 84,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.9 out of 10 from some 2,850 votes. A critics' rating of 6.2 out of 10 from 187 reviews places it on a level with the IMDb audience score and slightly above the TMDB figure.
What's left behind the scenes
- Liam Neeson's experience working as a truck and forklift driver at Guinness came in handy when operating the snowplow.
- The film crew spent four weeks in the Fortress Mountains in the Canadian province of Alberta in extreme weather conditions at an altitude of 2500 meters to realistically depict Kehoe on screen – a quiet town where a blood-red river flows beneath the white snow.
- In early 2017, the filmmakers were denied permission to shoot in Banff, Canada’s oldest national park, because the film's antagonist was Canadian. Even popular Canadian actor Tom Jackson couldn't persuade Parks Canada.
