Becky Sharp

Becky Sharp is an ambitious young woman from a poor background in nineteenth-century England. After Joseph Sedley rejects her because of her low social standing, she sets out to prove her worth by making her way into aristocratic circles. Her schoolfriend Amelia Sedley comes from a wealthy family, and Becky uses that friendship as a way into high society, though her climb carries risks for both women. The story is drawn from Langdon Mitchell's 1899 play, itself based on William Makepeace Thackeray's novel Vanity Fair, and unfolds against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars and the rigid English class system.

Rouben Mamoulian directed the film, which followed his Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Love Me Tonight and came before The Mark of Zorro and Silk Stockings in his filmography. Francis Edward Faragoh wrote the screenplay, and Miriam Hopkins plays Becky, with Frances Dee as Amelia, Cedric Hardwicke as the Marquis of Steyne, Billie Burke, Alison Skipworth and Nigel Bruce among the thirty-eight credited cast members. Released in June 1935, the film runs 84 minutes and was produced by Pioneer Pictures Corporation.
