Short description
Set during the Gold Rush era, The Sisters Brothers follows two hired killers, Eli and Charlie, who work for a powerful figure known only as the Commodore. He sends them after Hermann Kermit Warm, a chemist and would-be prospector travelling toward California with a secret the Commodore wants for himself. As the brothers make their way from Oregon toward the goldfields near Sacramento, their pursuit is complicated by a scout who seems to be tracking the same man, and by Eli's growing doubts about the life he and his brother lead. Charlie takes to violence readily, while Eli imagines something else for himself, and the journey tests the bond between them.
Jacques Audiard directed and co-wrote the film with Thomas Bidegain, following Dheepan in his filmography and preceding Paris, 13th District. John C. Reilly, who plays Eli, also produced, alongside Michael De Luca and Pascal Caucheteux. Joaquin Phoenix plays Charlie, with Jake Gyllenhaal as John Morris and Riz Ahmed as Warm. The production was a European and American co-production made for a reported 38 million dollars and released in September 2018.
On IMDb, viewers rate it 6.9 out of 10 from roughly 75,000 votes, while on TMDB it holds 6.8 from over 2,000 ratings. A critics' score of 7.4 from 211 reviews places it slightly above those audience figures. Its worldwide box office return of about 13 million dollars fell short of its budget.

- While working on the role of John Morris, Jake Gyllenhaal consulted with a historian-linguist for a month to study the manners and speech patterns of graduates from the first universities on the East Coast.
- This is the first English-language film by Frenchman Jacques Audiard.
- In pursuit of the scientist Warm, one of the brothers, Eli Sisters, acquires and learns to use a new invention – a toothbrush, but it turns out that John Morris also cleans his teeth progressively. The first patent for a toothbrush was obtained by American Wadsworth in 1850, but mass production in America did not begin until 1885.
- Filming took place in Romania and Spain, despite the film's setting in the states of Oregon and California.
- Director Jacques Audiard dedicated the film to his older brother, who passed away at the age of 25.
- To create the image of the utopian scientist Worm, chronicles of the Sensimonists – followers of the French scientist Saint-Simon, European pre-socialists who crossed the ocean in the 19th century hoping to build a new life in the United States – were used.
- The final scene in the Sisters’ family home was filmed in one long take. To create the impression of time jumps for the viewer, the actors involved in the scene changed clothes out of camera view.
- The film is based on the novel of the same name by Canadian writer Patrick DeWitt.
