The Brave One

Erica Bain hosts a New York City radio program built around the sounds and stories she gathers while walking its streets. Her life with her fiancé, David Kirmani, ends abruptly when the two are attacked one night and David is killed; Erica survives with severe injuries. After recovering, she finds the city she once loved has become a source of fear, and she grows unable to leave her home. She buys a gun and begins roaming the neighborhoods where she was attacked, while Detective Mercer, working the case, starts to suspect what she is doing.

Neil Jordan directed the film, the eleventh of the fifteen features he has made in chronological order, following Breakfast on Pluto and preceding Ondine. Jodie Foster plays Erica, with Terrence Howard as Detective Mercer, Nicky Katt as Detective Vitale, Naveen Andrews as David Kirmani and Mary Steenburgen as Carol. Roderick Taylor, Bruce A. Taylor and Cynthia Mort wrote the screenplay, and Joel Silver and Susan Downey produced.

Released in September 2007, the film runs 122 minutes and mixes crime, drama and thriller elements. Made for about 70 million dollars, it earned roughly the same amount worldwide, so it did not turn a profit at the box office. On IMDb it holds a 6.7 rating from around 66,000 votes, and on TMDB a 6.6 from about 1,100 votes, while a critics' score of 5.8 from 181 reviews places it below those audience figures.
