In Syria

Set during the Syrian civil war, this drama follows Oum Yazan, a mother who transforms her apartment into a sanctuary for her children and neighbors. As conflict rages in the streets of Damascus, the residents remain trapped inside to avoid the dangers of bombings and snipers. Oum Yazan struggles to maintain a sense of normalcy and routine for her small community despite severe shortages and the constant threat of violence. The group remains torn between the hope of staying together and the necessity of fleeing for their lives.

Written and directed by Philippe Van Leeuw, the film features Hiam Abbass in the lead role of Oum Yazan, appearing alongside Diamand Abou Abboud, Juliette Navis, Mohsen Abbas, Moustapha Al Kar, and Alissar Kaghadou. This co-production between Belgium, Lebanon, and France was released on June 22, 2017.
