Michael and Daphna Feldmann, a well-off couple in Tel Aviv, are told by soldiers at their door that their son Jonathan has died while serving at a remote desert outpost. The news upends their lives and their marriage, and Michael, an architect, is consumed by grief and rage. At the same time, the film follows the soldiers on duty at the isolated checkpoint where Jonathan is stationed.
Samuel Maoz wrote and directed the film, his second feature after a long gap following his 2009 debut Lebanon; his only other directing credit in between is a segment of the anthology Venice 70: Future Reloaded. Lior Ashkenazi and Sarah Adler play the parents, with Yonatan Shiray as Jonathan, Shira Haas as his sister Alma, and Yehuda Almagor and Karin Ugowski in supporting roles. The film is a German, Israeli, French and Swiss co-production.
Released in 2017, Foxtrot earned about 1 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 7.2 rating from roughly 8,400 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 from about 220 votes. A critics' rating of 8.2 from 141 reviews places it notably higher than either audience score, suggesting stronger support among professional reviewers than among general viewers.
