Georges Laurent hosts a literary programme on French television and lives comfortably in Paris with his wife Anne and their teenage son. His routine is disrupted when anonymous packages begin arriving: video tapes filmed from the street that record his own house and family, accompanied by drawings whose meaning is unclear. As the recordings grow more personal, Georges becomes convinced that whoever is sending them has known him for years. His marriage comes under strain and his sense of safety erodes. Because the tapes contain no explicit threat, the police decline to intervene, leaving him to work out the sender's identity on his own.
Michael Haneke wrote and directed the film, the tenth of the fourteen features he has directed in chronological order, following Time of the Wolf and preceding Funny Games. Daniel Auteuil plays Georges and Juliette Binoche plays Anne, with Annie Girardot as Georges's mother, Bernard Le Coq as his editor-in-chief, Daniel Duval as Pierre and Maurice Bénichou as Majid; thirty-three cast members are credited in all. Made on a budget of about nine million dollars, it took roughly sixteen million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.3 from over ninety thousand votes, and on TMDB a rating of 7 from somewhat more than a thousand votes, indicating a substantial and broadly appreciative audience for a European art-house drama.
