The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid is a live-action musical fantasy about Ariel, the youngest daughter of King Triton and the most headstrong of his children. Restless under the sea, she is drawn to the human world above and becomes fascinated by Prince Eric after visiting the surface. Because merfolk are forbidden from mixing with humans, she turns to the sea witch Ursula, who offers her a chance to live on land in exchange for her voice, a bargain that puts both Ariel and her father's rule in danger. The film adapts the Disney animated feature of the same name.

Rob Marshall directed, working from a screenplay by David Magee; Marshall also produced alongside Marc Platt and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The film is the eighth feature Marshall directed, following Mary Poppins Returns in 2018. Halle Bailey plays Ariel, with Jonah Hauer-King as Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Noma Dumezweni as the Queen and Art Malik as Sir Grimsby. The production was large in scale, with 102 credited cast members and 88 credited crew.

Released in May 2023, the film runs 135 minutes. Its budget of 355 million dollars was substantial, and it grossed 570 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.2 out of 10 from 178,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.3 out of 10 from 3,417 votes. A critics' rating of 6.3 out of 10 from 349 reviews places professional appraisal roughly level with the TMDB audience score and below the IMDb figure.
