Sunder Srivastava, a village schoolteacher, has his dream destroyed when a man he trusted takes his money and leaves him stranded in Bombay with nothing. Wandering the city with no one to turn to, he takes shelter in a graveyard, where he encounters the spirit of Amar, a murdered man who was once a powerful criminal. Both have been betrayed by people close to them, and they agree to help each other: Sunder will carry out an errand for the ghost, and in return the ghost will help him get back on his feet.
Directed by Rajiv Mehra, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Shaukat Baig, Chamatkar is a 1992 Hindi comedy with romantic elements. Shah Rukh Khan plays Sunder, the hapless teacher, while Naseeruddin Shah appears as the ghost, Amar. Urmila Matondkar, Tinnu Anand, Shammi Kapoor and Ashutosh Gowariker are among the supporting cast of twenty-three credited performers. The film runs 171 minutes and was produced by Parvesh C. Mehra for Eagle Films and United Producers.
Released in July 1992, the film holds a rating of 6.5 out of 10 on IMDb from around 7,700 votes, and the same score on TMDB from a much smaller base of 59 votes. The two audiences agree closely on the film's merits, and the substantially larger IMDb sample reflects its lasting visibility among viewers of Hindi cinema from that period.
