Frank Darbo is an ordinary man whose life falls apart when his wife, Sarah, becomes involved with a drug dealer named Jacques. Determined to win her back, Frank reinvents himself as the Crimson Bolt, a costumed vigilante armed with a wrench and no superpowers whatsoever. His efforts draw in Libby, a comic-book store clerk who becomes his enthusiastic partner under the name Boltie, and together they take their violent, improvised brand of justice to the streets, with Frank's self-appointed rules about who deserves punishment.

James Gunn wrote and directed the film, his second feature after Slither in 2006 and the one preceding Movie 43, Guardians of the Galaxy and later work. Rainn Wilson plays Frank, with Elliot Page as Libby, Liv Tyler as Sarah, Kevin Bacon as Jacques, Gregg Henry as Detective Felkner and Michael Rooker as Abe. Ted Hope, Miranda Bailey and Iris Ichishita produced the independently financed project on a budget of about 3 million dollars.

The film mixes action, comedy and drama within a modest running time of 96 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.7 from around 87,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 from roughly 1,800 votes, suggesting a generally positive but divided audience response. A critics' rating of 5.7 from 127 reviews is lower than both audience scores, indicating that reviewers were less receptive than viewers.
