Faces Places

Faces Places follows Agnès Varda, a veteran filmmaker, and JR, a photographer and street artist, as they travel through rural France together. Riding in JR's photographic truck, they seek out the people and places of the countryside, far from the big cities, and create large-scale portraits pasted onto walls, trains and shipping containers. The film documents the encounters they collect along the way and the friendship that develops between two artists of very different generations and working methods.

Agnès Varda directed and co-wrote the documentary with JR; it is the thirteenth of the fourteen films she directed, made after Tribute to Zgougou the Cat and before Ydessa, the Bears and etc. For JR it is the first of the four films he directed. Rosalie Varda produced. Varda and JR both appear as themselves, alongside Patricia Mercier, Amaury Bossy, Claude Flaert and Clemens Van Dungern.

Released in 2017, the film runs 94 minutes and comes from France. It earned roughly 1 million USD worldwide, a modest theatrical return for a documentary. Audiences rate it 7.8/10 on IMDb from 14,000 votes and 7.6/10 on TMDB from 429 votes, while critics give it 8.9/10 from 144 reviews, a warmer reception than the audience scores.
