Sonic the Hedgehog follows a fast, blue alien hedgehog who has made his home on Earth while keeping his existence hidden. When his speed draws attention, the government calls in the brilliant and eccentric Dr. Robotnik, who wants to capture Sonic and harness his power to dominate the world. Sonic teams up with Tom Wachowski, a small-town police officer, and together they set out to stay ahead of Robotnik and his forces.
The film is directed by Jeff Fowler and written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller. It is the first entry in Fowler's series of Sonic films, followed by three further instalments. Ben Schwartz voices Sonic, with James Marsden as Tom, Tika Sumpter as Maddie, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, Natasha Rothwell as Rachel and Adam Pally as Wade. It draws on the Sega video game character and was produced by Paramount, Original Film, Marza Animation Planet and SEGA. Around 40 cast members and 192 crew members are credited.
Made for about 85 million dollars, the film took roughly 320 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from about 191,000 votes; on TMDB it sits at 7.3 out of 10 from around 10,600 votes, so viewers there rate it noticeably higher than IMDb users do. A critics' rating of 5.9 out of 10 from 253 reviews places it below both audience scores.
