Lady Vengeance
Short description
Lee Geum-ja is a young woman who becomes the focus of a sensational murder case when she is accused of kidnapping and killing a child. She serves thirteen years in prison for the crime. Inside, her kindness toward fellow inmates earns her the nickname "Kind-Hearted Lady Geum-ja," and she spends her sentence preparing an elaborate plan of retribution. Once released, she sets out to find the person truly responsible for what happened, aided by the women she befriended behind bars.
Lady Vengeance is a 2005 Korean drama and thriller directed by Park Chan-wook, who wrote the screenplay with Chung Seo-kyung. It followed Oldboy and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance in the director's filmography and is often grouped with them as a revenge-themed trilogy. Lee Young-ae plays Geum-ja, with Choi Min-sik as Mr. Baek, and Kwon Yea-young, Kim Shi-hoo, Nam Il-woo and Kim Byeong-ok among the credited cast of 44.
The film is the fifth of the director's features, arriving between Three... Extremes and I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK. It took about 24 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.5 from roughly 93,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.5 from about 2,000, while critics' reviews average 7 out of 10, so audience and critical assessments sit close together.
What's left behind the scenes
- The original title of the film translates as 'Kindhearted Lady Kim-ja'.
- Initially, director Park Chan-wook planned to make a film about the revenge of an elderly woman and, accordingly, cast an older actress in the lead role. He eventually changed his mind, deciding that the film would be too similar to John Cassavetes' "Gloria" (1980).
- In the director's cut of the film, the initially color film gradually fades and becomes black and white by the end.
- The film's title translates to "Kindly Mrs. Kim-ja".
- The snow at the end of the film is not real. Salt brought in by two trucks was spread on the street and then "transformed" into snow using computer technology.
