Five men who have been playing the same game of tag since childhood set aside one month every year to hunt each other down without limits, putting their jobs and relationships at risk just to land a touch and shout that someone is "it." This year the game falls during the wedding of the one player who has never been caught, which ought to make him an easy target. He knows his friends are coming, though, and he has prepared for them. The story is drawn from the real-life game that a group of friends kept going for decades.
Jeff Tomsic directed the film, his first feature, from a screenplay by Rob McKittrick and Mark Steilen; Todd Garner and Steilen produced. The cast is led by Ed Helms, Jon Hamm, Jeremy Renner, Jake Johnson and Hannibal Buress as the five players, with Annabelle Wallis among the 46 credited performers.
Tag was released in 2018 and runs 101 minutes. Made for about 28 million dollars, it took in roughly 78 million worldwide, a return that more than covered its cost. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from about 161,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.7 out of 10 from a much smaller set of 3,553 votes. Critics were less enthusiastic, giving it 5.5 out of 10 across 203 reviews, which sits below both audience scores.
