A young man from a slum area sets out to improve the lives of the people around him, determined that they should be able to live with dignity. Standing in his way is an ambitious industrialist who cares only about extending his control over his business. The two become locked in a conflict that pits the young man's sense of community against the businessman's drive for dominance. The film is a Tamil-language drama with thriller elements, running two and a half hours.
Mohan Raja directed Velaikkaran, his second film in the director's chair after Hanuman Junction in 2001. He shares screenplay credit with N Baskaran and D Suresh, and R. D. Raja produced it under the 24AM Studios banner. Sivakarthikeyan plays Arivu, the young man at the centre of the story. Fahadh Faasil appears as Aadhi, Nayanthara as Mirunalini, Sneha as Kasthuri, Prakash Raj as Kasi, and Rohini as Ponni, among a credited cast of twenty-nine performers.
The film was released in December 2017. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.2 out of 10 from roughly 5,300 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9 out of 10 from about 40 votes. The larger and much more established IMDb sample places the film in favourable territory, and the smaller TMDB figure points in broadly the same direction, with the modest gap between them reflecting the difference in how many viewers each reflects.
