Short description
Michael Clayton is a fixer at a major New York law firm, a former prosecutor who has spent fifteen years quietly resolving the personal problems of wealthy clients. When Arthur Edens, the firm's lead attorney defending an agrochemical corporation in a multibillion-dollar class action, suffers a breakdown and turns against his own client, the firm sends Clayton to contain the damage. His efforts to manage the situation draw him into a conflict over the case and his own position within the firm.
Tony Gilroy wrote and directed the film, his first outing as a director after a career as a screenwriter. George Clooney plays the title role, with Tom Wilkinson as Edens, Tilda Swinton as the corporate attorney Karen Crowder, and Sydney Pollack as the firm's founding partner, Marty Bach. Pollack also produced alongside Jennifer Fox and Steve Samuels.
Made for about 25 million dollars, the film took in roughly 93 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.2 out of 10 from more than 171,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.8 from a much smaller number of votes. Critics rated it 7.6 out of 10 across 206 reviews, higher than the audience averages. Gilroy went on to direct Duplicity, The Bourne Legacy and Behemoth! in that order.
What's left behind the scenes
- The Mercedes-Benz car blown up in this film was previously used in the filming of "The Devil Wears Prada" (2006). It was slightly modified and repainted specifically for "Michael Clayton."
- Jennifer Ille played Michael's girlfriend in the film. However, all scenes with her were cut.
- The film was delivered to some cinemas under the false title 'State Attorneys'.
- Denzel Washington declined the offer to play the lead role. George Clooney also initially refused the role, but then he met Tony Gilroy, talked with him for two hours, realized they saw many things the same way, and agreed. Later, Washington watched the film and expressed regret for having turned it down.
- According to George Clooney, the case the film is based on involved a 'Ford Pinto' automobile, where the problem wasn't that the model was unsafe for consumers, but an internal memo from the manufacturer that calculated the cost of recalling the sold vehicles versus the cost of individual lawsuits from consumers who died in those cars, and decided it was cheaper to lose the lawsuits and pay them out than to recall the vehicles.
