Mary Queen of Scots
Short description
In sixteenth-century Europe, Mary Stuart returns to Scotland after the death of her husband, the King of France, to take up the throne that is hers by right. Her claim also extends to the English crown, which brings her into conflict with her cousin Elizabeth I. The two queens are rivals in power and in love, each weighing marriage and motherhood against independence while surrounded by courts troubled by betrayal, conspiracy and revolt. Their choices and the pressures of rule carry a heavy cost for both.
Josie Rourke directed the film, her first feature after a career in theatre, from a screenplay by Beau Willimon. Saoirse Ronan plays Mary, with Margot Robbie as Elizabeth, and the cast includes Jack Lowden, David Tennant, Guy Pearce and Gemma Chan.
Released in December 2018, the film was a co-production between the United Kingdom, China and the United States by Working Title Films, Focus Features and Perfect World Pictures, among others. Made for about 25 million dollars, it took roughly 47 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from around 60,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 out of 10 from about 2,000 votes. A critics' rating of 6.2 out of 10 from 294 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie saw each other in costume for the first time during the filming of the scene where their characters first meet. They rehearsed separately, and Robbie finished her rehearsals on the day Ronan began hers.
- Initially, Margot Robbie hesitated, unsure if she should accept the role of Elizabeth I (1533-1603). She only agreed to the role after receiving a letter from director Josie Rourke explaining why she saw only Robbie in the part.
- Saoirse Ronan was taught to ride by the same specialist who prepared Gal Gadot for her role in Patty Jenkins’s fantasy action film “Wonder Woman” (2017) – and on the very same horse.
- The film is based on John Guy’s book “Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart,” which suggests that Queens Mary and Elizabeth may have met face to face, contemplating the fate of their kingdoms. This idea is widely ridiculed, as it is generally believed that they only communicated through letters, as there is no historical evidence of a personal meeting.
