Gnomeo & Juliet

Gnomeo & Juliet is an animated family film that retells Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet with garden gnomes in the leading roles. Two neighboring gardens are home to rival clans of gnomes, one blue and one red, whose owners are feuding neighbors. After the humans go indoors, the ornaments come to life and carry on the quarrel, settling scores through lawnmower races and other mischief. Gnomeo, a blue gnome, and Juliet, a red gnome, meet and fall for each other, and their romance has to survive the hostility between their families. The story unfolds in a town called Stratford-upon-Avon and includes a plastic pink flamingo among its characters, with songs by Elton John on the soundtrack.

Kelly Asbury directed, working from a screenplay he wrote with Mark Burton and Andy Riley, and the voice cast includes James McAvoy as Gnomeo, Emily Blunt as Juliet, Michael Caine, Maggie Smith, Julie Walters and Jim Cummings. The film followed Asbury's Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron and Shrek 2 and came before Smurfs: The Lost Village and UglyDolls. Produced by Touchstone Pictures, Miramax, Mandate International and Rocket Pictures on a budget of 36 million dollars, it took about 190 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its cost. Audience scores sit at 5.9 out of 10 on IMDb from 63,000 votes and 5.9 out of 10 on TMDB from 2,120 votes, close to the critics' rating of 5.6 out of 10 from 125 reviews.
