Private Life

Private Life follows Richard and Rachel, a married couple in their forties living in New York who have spent years trying to have a child. Their efforts have taken them through fertility treatments and into the domestic adoption process, and the strain of repeated setbacks weighs on their relationship. When Sadie, Rachel's step-niece, comes to stay with them, a new possibility opens up for the couple, one that draws her into their attempts to build a family.

Tamara Jenkins wrote and directed the film, her second feature after The Savages in 2007. Paul Giamatti plays Richard Grimes and Kathryn Hahn plays Rachel Biegler, with Kayli Carter as Sadie Barrett. Molly Shannon, John Carroll Lynch and Desmin Borges appear in supporting roles. Jenkins produced alongside Anthony Bregman and Stefanie Azpiazu.

The film received a critics' rating of 7.7 out of 10 from 106 reviews, a stronger response than its audience scores on IMDb, where it holds 7.2 out of 10 from around 24,000 votes, and on TMDB, where it stands at 6.9 out of 10 from roughly 430 votes.
