Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City
Short description
In 1998, Claire Redfield returns to Raccoon City, the Midwestern town where she grew up, to find it hollowed out after the pharmaceutical company Umbrella moved its operations away. Something has gone wrong beneath the surface, and when it breaks loose, residents are changed and the town is overrun. Claire joins her police officer brother Chris, fellow officer Jill Valentine and rookie cop Leon Kennedy as they try to survive the night and learn what Umbrella has been hiding. The film adapts the early Resident Evil video games and shares its title with the first entry in the series. It is directed by Johannes Roberts, who also wrote the screenplay, and is his eighth feature, following 47 Meters Down: Uncaged. Kaya Scodelario, Hannah John-Kamen, Robbie Amell, Tom Hopper, Avan Jogia and Donal Logue lead a credited cast of 33.
The production, mounted by Davis Films, Constantin Film, Screen Gems and Capcom, cost about 25 million dollars and took roughly 42 million dollars worldwide, a return that roughly covers its budget before marketing. On IMDb the film sits at 5.2 out of 10 from around 71,000 votes, while on TMDB it holds 5.9 out of 10 from about 2,800 votes; the smaller audience sample is the warmer of the two. A critics' rating of 5 out of 10 from 92 reviews places it close to the viewer score on IMDb. Roberts went on to direct segments of V/H/S/99 and the 2026 film Primate.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film does not explain the architectural refinements of the police station building or the large statue in the background. The games provide an explanation for this – the building formerly housed an art museum.
- An infected woman writes the words "itchy tasty" on the glass with her finger. This is a reference to the original game, where the author became infected and gradually went insane.
- The film is based on the computer games Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2.
- At the beginning of the film, the heroine, Hanna John-Kamen, wonders what is worse – being swallowed by a giant snake or eaten by a man-eating shark. The first game in the franchise features both a giant snake and a flooded laboratory with sharks.
- Initially, James Wan was slated to produce and Greg Russo to write the screenplay, but the former left the project in December 2018, and the latter a month earlier, to focus on the science fiction action film "Mortal Kombat".
