In the summer of 1984, a small American town is shaken by the disappearance of local teenagers. Davey Armstrong, fifteen years old, becomes convinced that the serial killer responsible is his own neighbor, a respected police officer. With his three closest friends, he spends the vacation watching the man's house and collecting evidence, an investigation that turns increasingly dangerous as they get nearer to the truth.
The film is a Canadian-American production directed by the trio of François Simard, Anouk Whissell and Yoann-Karl Whissell, following their 2015 debut Turbo Kid. Matt Leslie and Stephen J. Smith wrote the screenplay. Graham Verchere plays Davey, with Judah Lewis, Caleb Emery and Cory Gruter-Andrew as his friends, Tiera Skovbye as Nikki Kaszuba and Rich Sommer as neighbor Wayne Mackey. It runs 106 minutes and was made for about 2 million dollars.
Summer of 84 was released in August 2018 and drew modest but solid audiences. On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from nearly 45,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.9 from over 1,500 votes. A critics' rating of 6.3 from 65 reviews places it a little below the viewer scores. After this film, the directors went on to Wake Up and We Are Zombies in 2024.
