Boy Erased

Boy Erased centres on Jared Eamons, a nineteen-year-old in a small American town whose father is a Baptist pastor. When Jared is outed to his parents, he faces a choice: enter a church-backed conversion therapy programme, or lose his family, his friends and his place in the only community he has known. He goes, and there clashes with Victor Sykes, the therapist who runs the programme, while his parents Marshall and Nancy wrestle with what their faith and their son require of them.

Joel Edgerton wrote and directed the film, his second feature after The Gift in 2015, and he appears as Sykes. Lucas Hedges plays Jared, with Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe as his parents, and Troye Sivan and Madelyn Cline among the supporting cast. The film's 35 credited players and 143 crew members indicate a modest-scale production, consistent with its reported budget of 11 million US dollars.

Released in September 2018, Boy Erased took about 12 million dollars worldwide, a figure close to its production cost. On IMDb it holds 6.9 out of 10 from roughly 46,000 votes, and on TMDB 7 out of 10 from around 1,500 votes. A critics' rating of 6.9 out of 10 across 266 reviews places it in line with the audience responses rather than above them.
