Farming is a British drama about Enitan, a Nigerian boy handed over by his parents to a white family in England so that he might have a better life. He grows up among other fostered children, and when he eventually returns to Nigeria he finds he no longer fits there either, so he goes back to England. Caught between two worlds and belonging to neither, he is drawn into the skinhead scene and rises to lead a gang, while his conscience begins to trouble him and leaving proves far from simple. The story draws on the childhood of the writer and director, and is set largely in 1980s England.
The film is directed and written by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, working here as a filmmaker rather than the actor he is better known as; it is his first feature as director. Damson Idris plays the grown Enitan, with Kate Beckinsale as Ingrid Carpenter, John Dagleish as Levi, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ms. Dapo, Jaime Winstone as Lynn and Genevieve Nnaji as Tolu, among a credited cast of 38. It runs 107 minutes and was released in September 2018.
On IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from around 2,600 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 6.2, from roughly 77 votes. Audience response is therefore middling and broadly consistent across the two, with the much smaller TMDB sample reflecting the film's limited reach.
