Mad Love

Mad Love centres on Matt Leland, a quiet, studious high school student who becomes involved with Casey Roberts, a rebellious and unpredictable new classmate. Their romance develops quickly, but Casey struggles with serious mental illness, and after a suicide attempt her parents have her admitted to a psychiatric hospital. Matt helps her leave the facility, and the two set off together, convinced that their relationship can succeed where treatment has not. As they travel, Matt is forced to confront how serious Casey's condition really is.

The film was directed by Antonia Bird, whose first feature it was in the chronological list of her work as a director, ahead of Priest, Face and Ravenous. Paula Milne wrote the screenplay, and David Manson produced it for Touchstone Pictures. Chris O'Donnell plays Matt, Drew Barrymore plays Casey, and Joan Allen appears as Casey's mother, Margaret; Matthew Lillard, Richard Chaim and Robert Nadir are also among the twenty-nine credited cast members, with sixty-eight crew credited. The film runs 95 minutes, was released in May 1995, and took about 15 million dollars worldwide.

Audience response has been modest: on IMDb it holds 5.4 out of 10 from roughly 7,400 votes, and on TMDB 5.2 out of 10 from 125 votes. A critics' rating of 4.7 out of 10 from 25 reviews places it slightly below the IMDb audience figure and close to the TMDB one.
