Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the United States government under President George W. Bush sought to justify an invasion of Iraq to remove Saddam Hussein from power. While many in the media accepted official claims regarding the existence of weapons of mass destruction, a small team of journalists at Knight-Ridder began to question these assertions. Led by John Walcott, reporters Jonathan Landay and Warren Strobel conducted their own investigation using anonymous sources, discovering that the justifications for war were based on falsehoods. They struggled to make the public and their peers listen to the truth as the push for military conflict grew.
