Short description

Nine translators are gathered in a luxurious, isolated bunker to work on the final volume of a bestselling trilogy. Cut off from the outside world, they are expected to complete the highly secret manuscript under strict security. When the opening pages of the book surface online and the culprit threatens to release more unless a ransom is paid, the dream assignment turns into a nightmare, and the publisher becomes determined to find out who among them leaked the text.

The Translators is a mystery thriller directed by Régis Roinsard, who wrote the screenplay with Daniel Presley and Romain Compingt. It was Roinsard's second feature, released between Populaire in 2012 and Waiting for Bojangles in 2021, and was produced by Alain Attal. The cast includes Olga Kurylenko, Lambert Wilson, Manolis Mavromatakis, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Alex Lawther and Riccardo Scamarcio, among 24 credited performers. The film was a Belgian-French production from Wild Bunch, VOO, BeTV and France 2 Cinéma.

Released in December 2019, the film took about 3 million dollars worldwide. Audiences rate it modestly, with 6.5 out of 10 on IMDb from around 11,000 votes and 6.4 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 566 votes. The critics' rating stands slightly higher at 6.7 out of 10 from 17 reviews, so the film drew somewhat warmer notices than the general audience response suggests.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The plot is based on the true story of 12 translators locked in a special bunker in Italy to work on the translation of Dan Brown's "Inferno".
