Cassandra's Dream

Two brothers in London are struggling with money. Terry works at a garage and has run up debts through gambling, while Ian helps run their parents' restaurant and dreams of a life beyond it. When the pair buy a sailboat they can barely afford, naming it Cassandra's Dream, their situation grows more precarious. Ian becomes involved with Angela, an actress with expensive tastes, and the brothers turn to their wealthy uncle Howard, who made his fortune in California, for help. His assistance comes with a condition: they must commit a crime for him. What follows strains the bond between the two men until they become enemies.

Woody Allen directed and wrote the film, the thirty-fifth of the forty-eight features he has directed in chronological order, arriving between Scoop and Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor play Terry and Ian, with Hayley Atwell as Angela, Sally Hawkins as Kate, Tom Wilkinson as Howard and Phil Davis as Martin Burns. The production, made across the United Kingdom, the United States and France, cost about 13 million dollars and took roughly 23 million dollars worldwide, a modest return.

Audience response is mixed but slightly favorable: on IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from around 55,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 850 votes. A film critics' rating of 5.8 out of 10 from 117 reviews places critical opinion somewhat below the audience scores.
