In 1970s Los Angeles, a social worker named Anna Tate-Garcia takes on a case involving two children who have gone missing under strange circumstances. As she looks into what happened, she learns that their mother, Patricia Alvarez, has warned her about an ancient Mexican legend known as La Llorona, the weeping woman who drowned her own children and now haunts the night, preying on others to replace them. Anna's own son and daughter soon become the targets, and the family's only hope rests with a former priest, Rafael Olvera, who uses mystical means to hold evil back.
The film was directed by Michael Chaves, working from a screenplay by Tobias Iaconis and Mikki Daughtry, and produced by James Wan, Gary Dauberman and Emile Gladstone. It was the first feature Chaves directed, followed by other films chronologically. Linda Cardellini leads the cast, with Raymond Cruz, Patricia Velásquez, Roman Christou, Jaynee-Lynne Kinchen and Marisol Ramirez.
Released in April 2019, the film had a budget of 9 million dollars and went on to take about 123 million dollars worldwide, a return that dwarfed its cost. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.6 out of 10 from more than 2,700 votes, indicating a mixed response from viewers.
