Short description
Adonis Creed has reached the top of his sport, but life outside the ring has grown complicated. Between family responsibilities and preparation for his next bout, he agrees to face an opponent whose name is bound up with his own family's history. Rocky Balboa, his trainer, is uneasy about the match, and with good reason. The film follows Adonis as he weighs what the fight means for his career, his marriage and his father's legacy, while Rocky must confront his own memories of the past.
Creed II was released in November 2018 and runs 130 minutes. Steven Caple Jr. directed from a screenplay by Sylvester Stallone and Juel Taylor, with Stallone and Irwin Winkler among the producers. Michael B. Jordan returns as Adonis Johnson alongside Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa, Tessa Thompson as Bianca, Phylicia Rashād as Mary Anne Creed, Wood Harris as Tony Evers and Russell Hornsby as Buddy Marcelle. Creed II was Caple's first film in the series; he went on to direct Transformers: Rise of the Beasts in 2023.
Made for about 50 million dollars, the film took roughly 214 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 7.1 out of 10 from around 169,000 votes, and on TMDB 7 out of 10 from about 5,900 votes. A critics' rating of 6.9 out of 10 from 312 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting broad agreement on its merits as a boxing drama.
What's left behind the scenes
- Adonis watches archival footage of his father, Apollo's, death in a fight against Drago on a tablet. This footage was shot for "Rocky 4" but was cut during editing.
- Sylvester Stallone is the only one who has appeared in all the films of the franchise.
- When Steven Caple Jr. wanted to slow down the action in key moments of the fights, cinematographer Kramer Morgenthau used an Arriflex Arri Alexa camera with a Panavision lens. He also used high-speed cameras capable of shooting 1000 frames per second. But many scenes were shot at 120 frames per second.
- Adonis trains in the same way the main character in "Rocky 4" (1985) trained before the rematch. He performed similar exercises and trained in secluded locations.
- This is the fourth film in the franchise featuring Cuff and Link, Rocky's turtles. They previously appeared in "Rocky" (John G. Avildsen, 1976), "Rocky II" (Sylvester Stallone, 1979), and "Creed: The Legacy of Rocky" (Ryan Coogler, 2015). These are the same reptiles from the early films in the franchise. By the time of filming, they had lived with Sylvester Stallone for nearly 50 years.
- Milo Ventimiglia returned to the role of Robert Balboa. Twelve years had passed since he first played the part in the film "Rocky Balboa".
- A short altercation was filmed between Rocky Balboa and Ivan Drago, but it was cut during editing. Stallone and Lundgren's characters clashed in the hospital, exchanged blows, but were immediately separated by hospital security and Drago's entourage.
- In the film, Bianca, played by Tessa Thompson, suffers from "progressive hearing loss" (which was only noticed when she was older), and her daughter Amara was born deaf. In reality, it is extremely rare for a person with progressive hearing loss to have a completely deaf child with a partner who has no hearing problems (in the script, this is Adonis Creed).
- The search for an actor who could convincingly play Viktor Drago took place worldwide. It took several months. The filmmakers were looking among actors and representatives of various martial arts, kickboxers, boxers, and American football players. It was only later that Stallone found Florian Munteanu, a German boxer weighing 106 kilograms and standing one meter ninety-five tall.
- Michael B. Jordan trained hard to convincingly portray Adonis Creed. He trained 2-3 times a day, followed a diet of brown rice, chicken, and broccoli, and eliminated sugar, bread, pasta, dairy, and cheese from his diet. Incidentally, the actor prepared in a similar way (though, according to him, not as meticulously) for his role in the series "Friday Night Lights" (2006-2011).
- Brigitte Nielsen returned to the role of Ludmila, Ivan Drago's ex-wife from "Rocky 4" (Sylvester Stallone, 1985). In reality, Nielsen was Stallone's ex-wife. They became engaged during the filming of "Rocky 4," married after the film's premiere, and divorced two years later.
- Bianca's songs were performed by Tessa Thompson herself.
- During the filming of her scenes, Brigitte Nielsen was eight months pregnant, and the cinematographer had to take this into account to keep her stomach out of the frame. Two weeks after finishing work on the film, Nielsen gave birth to her fifth child and first daughter. They named the girl Frida.
