Final Analysis

Isaac Barr is a San Francisco psychiatrist whose work with a troubled patient, Diana Baylor, leads him to her sister Heather. He becomes involved with Heather and, when she is accused of killing her husband, he uses his professional standing to help her. What begins as an affair and a legal predicament gradually turns into something more calculated, and Barr comes to suspect that he has been drawn into events he never fully understood.

Phil Joanou directed the film, his third feature after Three O'Clock High and State of Grace. Wesley Strick wrote the screenplay, and Charles Roven, Richard Gere and Paul Junger Witt produced it for Warner Bros. Pictures. Gere plays Barr, with Kim Basinger as Heather, Uma Thurman as Diana and Eric Roberts as Heather's husband. The credited cast runs to 34 names, among them Paul Guilfoyle and Keith David.

Made for about 32 million dollars, the film took in roughly 29 million worldwide during its 1992 release, falling short of its budget. On IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from around 16,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.8 from a much smaller group of 326. A critics' score of 5.3 from 30 reviews places it slightly below even the modest audience ratings.
