Wild Rose centres on Rose-Lynn Harlan, a young woman from Glasgow just out of prison who wants nothing more than to leave Scotland and build a career as a country singer in Nashville. She has two young children who were looked after by her mother, Marion, while she was serving her sentence, and Marion expects her to settle down and take responsibility. Rose-Lynn instead keeps chasing music, and when she loses her old job, Marion arranges work for her as a cleaner in a wealthy household, where a meeting with her employer opens an unexpected route toward her ambitions. The film follows her struggle to reconcile her family obligations with a dream she is unwilling to give up.
The film was directed by Tom Harper, its screenplay written by Nicole Taylor and produced by Faye Ward. It is the third feature Harper directed, arriving between The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death and The Aeronauts in a run that later continued with Heart of Stone and Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man. Jessie Buckley plays Rose-Lynn, with Julie Walters as Marion, Sophie Okonedo as Susannah, Jamie Sives, James Harkness and Craig Parkinson among the cast.
Released in 2019, the film runs 101 minutes and was produced across the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States by Sierra/Affinity, Film4 Productions, Entertainment One and the BFI. On IMDb it holds 7.1 out of 10 from roughly 17,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.8 from far fewer votes. A critics' rating of 7.8 from 195 reviews places it clearly above both audience scores.
