A widowed single mother in a small American town, Stephanie Smothers, runs a parenting video blog and fills her days with school runs and crafts. Through her young son she meets Emily Nelson, a stylish and worldly woman whose own son attends the same school, and the two strike up an unlikely friendship. When Emily asks Stephanie to collect her son from school and then fails to return, Stephanie begins looking into what happened. She is joined in the search by Emily's husband, Sean, and together they uncover sides of Emily's life that she had kept hidden, in a story that moves through loyalty, betrayal, deception and revenge.
Paul Feig directed and produced the film, and wrote the screenplay with Jessica Sharzer. It followed his earlier comedies Bridesmaids, The Heat, Spy and Ghostbusters, and was released in September 2018. Anna Kendrick plays Stephanie, Blake Lively plays Emily, and Henry Golding plays Sean, with Rupert Friend, Linda Cardellini and Bashir Salahuddin among the supporting cast. The production had a modest budget of about 20 million dollars and took roughly 98 million dollars worldwide.
Reception data shows a divided response rather than a clear consensus. On IMDb the film averages 6.7 out of 10 from around 189,000 votes, and on TMDB it averages 6.6 out of 10 from roughly 4,700 ratings. A critics' rating of 6.9 out of 10 from 259 reviews places professional assessment slightly above both audience scores.
