Gangster Land
Short description
Set during the Prohibition era, this crime drama follows the rise of Al Capone and the growth of his criminal organization. The story is told primarily through the perspective of Jack McGurn, a former amateur boxer who joined the Italian mafia following his stepfather's murder. As Capone's second in command, McGurn helps build one of the most profitable criminal enterprises in the United States. This expansion leads to a violent conflict with the Irish mafia and George Bugs Moran, eventually resulting in the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. Meanwhile, a detective named Reed works to clear Chicago of these gangsters and bring Capone to justice.
The film was directed by Timothy Woodward Jr., marking the fifth project in a sequence of works that includes Hickok and American Violence earlier in 2017. The screenplay was written by Ian Patrick Williams. The ensemble cast features Sean Faris as Jack McGurn, Milo Gibson as Al Capone, and Jason Patric as Detective Reed, alongside Peter Facinelli, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, and Mark Rolston. Audience reception was mixed to poor, as shown by a rating of 4.3/10 on IMDb from 1,800 votes and a slightly higher score of 5.4/10 on TMDB based on 64 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- Mark Rolston, who played Dion, was 61 years old at the time of filming. The prototype for his character was actually shot at the age of 32.
- In those days, men always removed their hats indoors. Wearing a hat inside was considered bad manners and disrespectful.
- In the boxing match scene, Black people are seated among white people. In the era depicted, Black and white people were seated separately (the only exception being during important boxing matches, such as for a championship title).
- During the raid, federal agents identify themselves as “FBI.” The term “Federal Bureau of Investigation” did not come into use until 1935, i.e., several years after the events in question.
