Short description

Redcon-1 is a British action horror film set in a near-future England devastated by a viral outbreak that turns people into flesh-eating zombies. After the infection spreads from a London prison, the south east of the country is sealed off behind fortified borders. When intelligence suggests that the scientist behind the outbreak is still alive inside the quarantine zone, an eight-strong Special Forces squad is sent into the ruined capital to bring him out within seventy-two hours, since his recovery is seen as the only route to a cure.

The film was directed by Chee Keong Cheung, who wrote the screenplay with Mark Strange and Steve Horvath, and it was produced by Strange, Cheung and Ioanna Karavela. Oris Erhuero leads as Captain Marcus Stanton, with Carlos Gallardo, Mark Strange, Joshua Dickinson, Martyn Ford and Akira Koieyama among the squad. Redcon-1 was Cheung's first feature as director, ahead of Son of the Soil and Bad Day at the Office.

It opened in 2018 and runs 117 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 3.8 from around 3,900 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.7 from 333 votes. A critics' rating of 4.4 from 11 reviews places it close to the IMDb audience figure, both well below the more favourable TMDB score.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Some scenes were filmed in Glasgow – specifically on Washington Street.
  • Filming also took place in an old prison in Peterhead – the largest town and fishing port in Aberdeenshire. It is famous for a prisoner riot in 1987, which was quelled by forces from the Special Air Service – a special forces unit of the British Armed Forces.
  • Filming of some scenes took place in an old mine in the Scottish county of Midlothian.
