Four of the Apocalypse

Four of the Apocalypse is an Italian Western set in 1870s Utah. A gambler, a pregnant prostitute, an alcoholic and a man who believes he can speak with the dead are thrown into the same jail cell in a frontier town where the sheriff tolerates vigilante justice. They survive the lynching that follows, escape by wagon, and set out together across the desert in search of food, water and somewhere to start again. Their journey brings them into contact with Chaco, a sadistic bandit whose treatment of the group leaves them stranded and turns their trek into a struggle to survive. The gambler, Stubby, vows revenge, and the group presses on through the wilderness.

Lucio Fulci directed, working from a screenplay by Ennio De Concini, with Edmondo Amati producing. It was the eighth of the nineteen films Fulci directed, arriving between White Fang in 1973 and My Sister in Law in 1976, and it departs from the Westerns of his earlier years in its bleak tone. Fabio Testi plays Stubby, Lynne Frederick plays Bunny, Michael J. Pollard plays Clem, Harry Baird plays Bud and Tomas Milian plays Chaco, with Adolfo Lastretti as Reverend Sullivan. The film runs 104 minutes.

Audience response has been modest: on IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from around 3,300 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of voters.
