Eighth Grade

Eighth Grade follows Kayla Day, a thirteen-year-old finishing her eighth-grade year in suburban America. Shy and struggling to connect with classmates, she records YouTube videos offering advice to other teenagers about loneliness and anxiety, though she finds it hard to take her own guidance. Over the course of her final week of middle school, before high school begins, she tries to close the distance between how she sees herself and the person she believes she should be. Her father, Mark, reaches out to her while she navigates encounters with older students and the everyday pressures of being a teenager.

The film is Bo Burnham's first narrative feature and his second work as director, following the 2016 comedy special Bo Burnham: Make Happy and preceding Bo Burnham: Inside in 2021. Burnham wrote the screenplay, and the cast is led by Elsie Fisher as Kayla, with Josh Hamilton as her father and supporting turns from Emily Robinson, Jake Ryan, Daniel Zolghadri and Fred Hechinger. Scott Rudin, Lila Yacoub and Eli Bush produced for A24, Scott Rudin Productions and IAC Films.

Made for about two million dollars, the film took roughly fourteen million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds a 7.3 rating from around 87,000 votes, and on TMDB a 7.1 from about 1,700 votes. A critics' rating of 8.8 from 322 reviews places it noticeably above those audience scores.
