Short description

Lightning McQueen, the racing star of Radiator Springs, sets out with his best friend Mater to take part in the first World Grand Prix, a competition meant to decide the fastest car on the planet. The event moves through several countries, and McQueen faces rivals from different racing disciplines. Mater, meanwhile, is mistaken for an undercover agent and pulled into an international espionage operation involving hidden devices and a larger conspiracy, which keeps him occupied while McQueen concentrates on the championship. The contrast between McQueen's drive to win and Mater's accidental second life as a spy shapes the film.

Cars 2 is a Pixar and Walt Disney Pictures production directed by John Lasseter, following Cars and the related Mater shorts in his filmography. Ben Queen wrote the screenplay, Denise Ream produced, and the voice cast includes Larry the Cable Guy as Mater, Owen Wilson as Lightning McQueen, Michael Caine as Finn McMissile, Emily Mortimer as Holley Shiftwell, Eddie Izzard as Sir Miles Axlerod and John Turturro as Francesco Bernoulli. Roughly 52 cast members and 232 crew members are credited.

The film cost about 200 million USD to make and took around 560 million USD worldwide. Audiences rate it 6.2/10 on IMDb from 253,000 votes and 6.2/10 on TMDB from 8,705 votes, while film critics give it 5.5/10 from 216 reviews, so critics were less positive than viewers.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Among Professor Z's possessions, one can notice a group of ZAZ 968 cars, or rather its export version, the Jalta 968.
  • When Mater, Finn McMissile and Holly Shiftwell were in France, a restaurant called "Gusteau's" could be noticed (a reference to another Pixar film – "Ratatouille"). Only Gusteau himself was in an auto-prototype (he looks very much like Mater).
  • Out of respect for Paul Newman, who passed away in 2008, the character of Doc Hudson was not included in the second film. To mention Doc Hudson in the film, they decided to name the Piston Cup in his honor. It is also reported that Doc has passed away.
  • During the race in Radiator Springs, you can spot the Pizza Planet vehicle among the spectators (a reference to "Toy Story"). This vehicle appears in all films produced by Pixar.
  • John Lasseter conceived the story for the sequel back in 2006 while in Europe promoting the first animated film.
  • All car brands correspond to the countries where they are manufactured. For example, Italy has many "Ferrari" and "Fiat" cars, Japan has "Mazda" and "Subaru", and the United Kingdom has "Land Rover" and "Bentley".
