Judy is a biographical drama about the singer and actress Judy Garland during a difficult period near the end of her life. In the winter of 1968, roughly three decades after The Wizard of Oz made her a star, she travels to London for a run of sold-out performances at the Talk of the Town. Exhausted by a lifetime of work that began in childhood, she struggles with management over the demands of the shows while charming the musicians around her. She longs to return home to her children, and she begins a romance with Mickey Deans, who would become her fifth husband.
Rupert Goold directed the film, his second feature after True Story, from a screenplay by Tom Edge. Renée Zellweger plays Garland, with Jessie Buckley as Rosalyn Wilder, Finn Wittrock as Mickey Deans, Rufus Sewell as Sid Luft, Michael Gambon as Bernard Delfont and Richard Cordery as Louis B. Mayer. The production, a British, American and French co-production, cost about 10 million dollars and took roughly 39 million dollars worldwide, a strong return relative to its budget.
The film drew a critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from 351 reviews, compared with 6.7 out of 10 on TMDB from about 1,285 votes and the same average on IMDb, where the vote count is far larger; the two audiences broadly agree.
