Gloria Bell is a divorced woman in her fifties living in Los Angeles. Her grown children, Anne and Peter, have lives of their own, and her days pass in an office job that offers little excitement. At night she goes out dancing at clubs and singles parties across the city, where she can lose herself on the dance floor. On one such evening she meets Arnold, a divorced man, and the two begin a romance. The relationship brings her happiness but also complications and uncertainty, and Gloria must weigh what she wants against the demands of family and the question of how much of herself she is willing to give up.
The film is directed and written by Sebastián Lelio and is an English-language reworking of his own 2013 Chilean film Gloria, which he made between Christmas and A Fantastic Woman, before Disobedience. Julianne Moore plays Gloria, with John Turturro as Arnold, Michael Cera as Peter, Caren Pistorius as Anne, Brad Garrett and Sean Astin in supporting roles. Pablo Larraín and Juan de Dios Larraín produced alongside Lelio.
Released in March 2019, Gloria Bell earned about 11 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.3 from roughly 14,000 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 6 from around 352 votes. Those viewer scores sit below the critics' rating of 7.5 from 207 reviews, indicating stronger approval from reviewers than from the wider audience.
