Camille is a shy teenager living with her single mother on Long Island when a skateboarding injury leads her to promise that she will give up the sport. Her resolve does not last. Through Instagram she discovers a crew of young women who call themselves the Skate Kitchen, and she seeks them out in New York City, gradually earning a place among them. The friendships she forms pull her deeper into the group's world and away from her mother, while the attention of a young male skater complicates her new life.
The film was directed by Crystal Moselle, who wrote the screenplay with Aslıhan Ünaldı and Jen Silverman. It was her first narrative feature, following her documentary work, and precedes The Black Sea in her filmography. Rachelle Vinberg plays Camille, with Dede Lovelace, Nina Moran, Kabrina Adams, Ajani Russell and Elizabeth Rodriguez among the cast. The production was split across Brazil, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Released in August 2018, the film runs 106 minutes and blends comedy with drama. On IMDb it holds 6.8 from around 5,200 votes, and on TMDB 6.7 from a much smaller base of 137. A critics' rating of 7.2 from 102 reviews places it slightly above both audience scores.
