The Kid
Short description
The Kid is a Western set in New Mexico Territory in 1880. Teenager Rio Cutler and his older sister Sara are forced to leave their home after a violent family tragedy, and their attempt to reach Santa Fe brings them into the path of the outlaw Billy the Kid and his gang. Sheriff Pat Garrett is pursuing the fugitives, and Rio, who once admired Billy, comes to see the difference between the celebrated gunslinger and the lawman. Vincent D'Onofrio directed from a screenplay by Andrew Lanham.
Ethan Hawke plays Pat Garrett and Dane DeHaan plays Billy Bonney, with Jake Schur as Rio, Leila George as Sara, and Chris Pratt as Grant Cutler among a credited cast of 46. The production, from Mimran Schur Pictures and Suretone Pictures, had a budget of 8 million dollars and returned about 2 million worldwide, a small fraction of its cost.
The film holds a 5.9 rating on IMDb from roughly 10,000 votes and a 6 on TMDB from around 335 votes, while critics gave it 5.4 from 47 reviews, so audiences and reviewers landed in similar territory.
What's left behind the scenes
- When Billy the Kid (1859-1881) appears on screen for the first time, his pose is an exact copy of the pose in the famous photograph, which is considered one of the very few pictures of him. The photo depicts him as left-handed, however, it is a ferrotype (an early photographic process using metal plates coated with dark varnish and a light-sensitive collodion), meaning the image on it is reversed. This is why Billy the Kid is often portrayed as left-handed in many films.
