Buffalo Boys

Set in the nineteenth century, when Indonesia was under Dutch colonial rule, Buffalo Boys follows two brothers whose father, a sultan who resisted the colonial forces, was killed in a massacre. The surviving sons, Jamar and Suwo, are taken away by their uncle Arana and raised far from home, in the American West, where the three spend years working on the railways. In 1860 they return to Indonesia, determined to track down the man responsible for their family's destruction. Their search brings them into contact with a village and with Kiona, the daughter of its leader, and the brothers' presence places the community at risk when it emerges that the man they are hunting holds power over the region.

Mike Wiluan directed and co-wrote the film with Raymond Lee and Rayya Makarim, and also produced it alongside Kimberly James. It was his first feature as director, followed by Motel Melati in 2023 and Monster Island in 2025. The cast is led by Ario Bayu and Yoshi Sudarso as the brothers, with Tio Pakusadewo as Arana, Pevita Pearce as Kiona, Reinout Bussemaker as the colonial officer they pursue, and Mikha Tambayong as Sri. The production, a collaboration between Indonesian and Singaporean companies, brought together 29 credited cast members and 55 credited crew.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 5.7 from around 1,400 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.6 from 53 votes. A film critics' rating of 6.6 from 33 reviews places it close to the audience score recorded there.
