Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)
Short description
Harley Quinn has broken up with the Joker, and she announces the split to all of Gotham by blowing up the chemical plant where they once were together. No longer protected by him, she finds herself a target for various criminals around the city. Meanwhile, crime lord Roman Sionis, who has become a powerful figure in Gotham's underworld, is hunting for a diamond taken from one of his men by a young pickpocket named Cassandra Cain. When Sionis and his enforcer Victor Zsasz go after the girl, Harley's path crosses with those of Huntress, Black Canary and police detective Renee Montoya, and the four women end up joining forces against him.
Cathy Yan directs from a screenplay by Christina Hodson. The film was Yan's first feature as director; her second, The Gallerist, followed in 2026. Margot Robbie plays Harley Quinn and also produced, alongside Bryan Unkeless and Sue Kroll. The cast includes Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Helena Bertinelli, Jurnee Smollett as Dinah Lance, Ewan McGregor as Roman Sionis and Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain. The production assembled 101 credited cast members and 243 credited crew.
Made on a budget of 85 million dollars, the film took about 205 million dollars worldwide, a modest return for a comic-book release of its scale. On IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from roughly 281,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9 from around 11,000. A critics' score of 6.8 from 450 reviews places it close to the audience result on TMDB and somewhat above the IMDb figure.
What's left behind the scenes
- The on-screen Cassandra Cain has nothing in common with her comic book counterpart. The only common trait is that the character in the film has difficulty speaking, as she is mute in the comics. Her parents taught her from childhood to focus on body language.
- The police officers in the film are named Dimm and Tini. This is a reference to Bruce W. Timm and Paul Dini, who created the character.
- Harley's father traded her for a can of Dini-brand beer. This is a reference to the character's creator, Paul Dini.
- Leaving the police station, Harley points to a wanted poster and says, "I know him." The poster depicts Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) from "Suicide Squad."
- Jurnee Smollett sings herself in the film.
- Initially, it was assumed that the Penguin would be the main antagonist, but this idea was abandoned. Colin Farrell's portrayal of this character will appear in the remake of "The Batman" (Matt Reeves, 2021).
- Each heroine in the film has her own fighting style. Harley Quinn's style is based on gymnastics, Huntress prefers to throw her opponents over her, Black Canary kicks her opponents, and Renee Montoya fights with her fists.
