Sanju

Sanju is a biographical drama about the Indian actor Sanjay Dutt, following his life from a celebrated film family through drug addiction, brushes with organized crime and prison sentences. Ranbir Kapoor plays Dutt, with Paresh Rawal as his father, Sunil Dutt, and Manisha Koirala as his mother, Nargis. The film moves between several periods of his life, tracing how fame, personal loss and legal trouble shaped him, and how the public and media responded to a man they thought they knew.

Rajkumar Hirani directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Abhijat Joshi, and produced with Vidhu Vinod Chopra. It was Hirani's fifth feature, arriving after 3 Idiots and PK and before Dunki. The supporting cast includes Vicky Kaushal, Anushka Sharma and Dia Mirza. Made for a budget of about 22 million dollars, it took roughly 67 million dollars worldwide, a strong return for an Indian drama of its kind. On IMDb it holds 7.6 out of 10 from around 67,000 votes, compared with 7.2 from about 226 votes on TMDB. A critics' rating of 6.4 from 17 reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores, suggesting viewers responded to it more warmly than reviewers did.
