Triangle of Sadness
Short description
Triangle of Sadness follows Carl and Yaya, a pair of fashion models whose relationship and online image are built on carefully staged photographs. When they are invited aboard a luxury yacht cruise among wealthy guests, including a Russian businessman, British arms manufacturers and an IT billionaire, the trip initially looks like another enviable backdrop. Presiding over the vessel is a captain who spends his time drunk and quoting Marx, while the crew tends to the passengers' every whim.
The voyage takes a disastrous turn during a storm, and a group of survivors ends up stranded on a deserted island. There, the old hierarchy collapses and is rebuilt around whoever can actually fish and light a fire, which turns out to be a member of the ship's cleaning staff, Abigail. The ensemble cast includes Harris Dickinson, Charlbi Dean, Dolly de Leon, Woody Harrelson, Zlatko Burić and Vicki Berlin.
Ruben Östlund wrote and directed the film, his third feature after Force Majeure (2014) and The Square (2017); it was produced by Philippe Bober and Erik Hemmendorff. Made for about 16 million USD, it grossed roughly 25 million USD worldwide. On IMDb and TMDB the audience ratings sit around 7 out of 10, while the critics' rating of 7.2 from 276 reviews is close to that level.
What's left behind the scenes
- The British couple who turn out to be arms dealers are named Winston and Clementine, after Winston and Clementine Churchill.
- The character Dmitry is inspired by Dmitry Rybolovlev – an oligarch, formerly the de facto owner of "Uralkali" and the owner of a superyacht.
- Dolly de Leon confirmed in an interview that her character did indeed kill Yaya (Charlbi Dean). This is not shown in the film, although there is a hint of such an outcome.
- The yacht scenes were filmed on the Christina O yacht, which once belonged to the family of Greek billionaire Aristotle Onassis. Due to the high rental cost, the filmmakers only had 9 days to shoot on the yacht. Fortunately, they managed to finish filming just a day before the next lockdown.
- After getting the role of Carl, Harris Dickinson learned that he was to play a mechanic who would later become a model. Dickinson tried to learn as much as possible about the profession of an auto mechanic, and only on set did he find out that he could have saved himself the trouble, as all the details were removed from the script.
- The scenes on the yacht were filmed on the Christina O, which once belonged to the family of the Greek multimillionaire Aristotle Onassis. Due to the high cost of rental, the filmmakers had only 9 days to shoot on the yacht.
- The film was shot in 2020 in three stages between lockdowns – in Sweden from mid-February to late March and from late June to early July, and also in Greece from mid-September to mid-November.
- According to the actors, director Ruben Östlund often shot up to 20 takes of each scene. Harris Dickinson admitted in an interview that he even enjoyed this, as it forced him to give his all.
