Marighella

Marighella is a Brazilian action drama set during the military dictatorship that took hold after the 1964 coup. Carlos Marighella is an Afro-Brazilian poet and politician who turns away from conventional politics when the regime closes off peaceful opposition. Leaving behind his wife and son, he takes up arms and forms a resistance group, becoming one of the government's most wanted enemies as he confronts state censorship and repression.

The film marks Wagner Moura's directorial debut, with Moura also writing the screenplay alongside Felipe Braga and producing through O2 Filmes, Globo Filmes and Maria da Fé. Seu Jorge leads the cast as Marighella, joined by Bruno Gagliasso, Luiz Carlos Vasconcelos, Humberto Carrão and Bella Camero, among 55 credited performers. Made for a modest 2 million dollars, the 155-minute film places a well-known actor's move behind the camera at the service of a period chapter in Brazilian history.

On IMDb it holds 7.1/10 from 57,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.6/10 from 137 votes. The large gap in vote counts reflects how much wider the film's audience is on the first platform than the second. Its commercial scale was small, consistent with a national production built around a historical subject rather than spectacle.
