Short description

The Mitchells vs. the Machines follows Katie Mitchell, an aspiring filmmaker accepted into the film school of her dreams. Before she leaves, her father Rick cancels the family's flight and announces a cross-country road trip to deliver her to campus himself, joined by her mother Linda, her younger brother Aaron and the family dog Monchi. The journey goes wrong when electronics around the world turn against humanity.

Directed by Mike Rianda and Jeff Rowe, who wrote the screenplay together, the film was released in April 2021 and runs 110 minutes. It is the first feature Rianda directed and the first in Rowe's directing career, followed by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023) and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2 (2027). Production was handled by Columbia Pictures, Sony Pictures Animation, Lord Miller and One Cool Film Production, the last reflecting Hong Kong among the film's countries of origin. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller produced alongside Kurt Albrecht.

The voice cast includes Abbi Jacobson as Katie, Danny McBride as Rick, Maya Rudolph as Linda, Mike Rianda as Aaron and other roles, Eric André as Mark and Olivia Colman as PAL. The production budget was 75 million USD. On IMDb the film holds 7.6/10 from 141,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.8/10 from 3,501 votes. A critics' rating of 8.2/10 from 212 reviews places it above both audience scores, indicating strong critical approval alongside solid viewer support.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The role of the pug, Monchi, was initially intended to be voiced by a professional actor, but ultimately it was voiced by a real dog – a pug named Doug, who has many followers online and on social media and the status of a celebrity dog.
