Sue Ann keeps to herself in a small Ohio town. When Maggie, a teenager who has just moved there, asks her to buy alcohol for her and her friends, Sue Ann agrees and goes further, offering the basement of her house as a place where the group can drink without being bothered by adults. She sets conditions for using it: the driver stays sober, certain language is not allowed, the upper floors are off limits, and the teenagers are to call her Ma. What begins as a convenient arrangement for the friends gradually turns into something else, as Sue Ann's need for their company takes over and the basement stops being a safe hangout.

Tate Taylor directed the film from a screenplay by Scotty Landes, with Jason Blum and John Norris among the producers. It is the fourth feature Taylor directed, arriving between The Girl on the Train and Ava. Octavia Spencer plays Sue Ann; Juliette Lewis, Diana Silvers, McKaley Miller, Corey Fogelmanis and Luke Evans are among the credited cast of 36, with 108 crew members credited.
